Economic Development - The Department of Community Affairs is responsible for state administration of many incentive programs as well as providing technical assistance in the area of economic development to local governments, development authorities, and private for-profit entities.

Foundation for Rural Service (FRS), - We inform and educate the public on rural telecommunications.The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS), through a partnership with the National Telephone Cooperative Association (NTCA), aims to educate the public on rural telecommunications issues and advocates on behalf of the industry in order to improve the quality of life throughout rural America. FRS is a 501 (c)(3) organization.

Fund for Rural America 2001 - The Fund for Rural America competitive grant program supports competitively awarded research, extension and education grants addressing key issues that contribute to economic diversification and sustainable development in rural areas. The amount available for support of this program in FY 2001 is approximately $9,500,000. It is anticipated that approximately 15-20 awards will be made from the two programmatic areas.

Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs - The Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs located at Western Illinois University is designed to improve the quality of life in rural areas by developing public-private partnerships with local agencies on community development projects in rural areas. IIRA works on projects including rural economic and community development (including value-added agriculture), rural health care, rural education, rural public transportation, and public management policies.

Living History Farms; Get Your Grip on History and Economic Opportunity - Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa, tells the amazing story of how Iowans transformed the fertile prairies of the Midwest into the most productive farmland in the world. At the 600-acre open-air museum, visitors travel at their own pace through five historical time periods spanning 300 years. On-site interpreters provide seasonal activities and demonstrations.
