  • US Legislative Activity in 2001 Related to Agricultural Biotechnology - During the 2001-2002 legislative sessions, 158 pieces of legislation related to agricultural biotechnology were introduced in 39 states and 31 pieces of legislation were introduced in Congress. This fact sheet provides an overview of the federal and state legislative activity related to agricultural biotechnology, the common concerns driving much of that legislation, and a summary of those bills passed into law.

  • USDA - Biotechnology Programs - The importance of genetically engineered organisms (GEO) in agriculture is increasing at a rapid pace. Consumer preferences, domestic and foreign, are requiring food companies to preserve the identity of voluntarily labeled non-bioengineered crops and food products. In Some countries have established labeling requirements for these agricultural commodities. This is creating a need to be able to differentiate bioengineered from conventional crops in the farm to table continuum.

  • �Terminator Seeds� Threaten an End to Farming - The 12,000-year-old practice in which farm families save their best seed from one year's harvest for the next season's planting may be coming to an end by the year 2000. In March 1998, Delta & Pine Land Co. and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced they had received a US patent on a new genetic technology designed to prevent "unauthorized seed-saving" by farmers.
