  • Cereal by-products make good fuel - Scientists at the Lacombe Research Centre took part in a project to evaluate cereals as a source of ethanol. Although the grain itself is the traditional source, new technologies allow the straw to be used as well. Using the entire biomass of the harvest changes the way you'd estimate the ethanol yield. Scientists determined that oat and triticale have the highest biomass yield, making these crops a good bet for ethanol production.

  • CLIMATE CHANGE AND FARMING - Though the temperature increases from global warming have hurt farms in some places, others will benefit. In northern Europe, yields of sugar beets and canola have increased, and in the eastern United States, global warming is expected to boost farm productivity. The lesson is that the time is now to prepare the world's agricultural systems for an era of global warming, the researchers conclude.

  • Country of Origin Labeling - On May 13, 2002, President Bush signed into law the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, more commonly known as the 2002 Farm Bill. One of its many initiatives requires country of origin labeling for beef, lamb, pork, fish, perishable agricultural commodities and peanuts. As described in the legislation, program implementation is the responsibility of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service
